In response to global rice shortage (and therefore rising grain prices), the newly elected Thai government is planning to increase rice paddy acreage.
Bottom line driven or not, that is a step in the appropriate direction.
PM Samak Sundaravej’s government is putting a stop to conversions of agriculture land into industry, residential, or recreational use. This is a costly affair, with the government budgeting billions of baht over 12 years.
Thailand finds pride in being the world’s kitchen. It is comforting to hear the PM’s stance that he will continue to position the country as such.
