The days when annual pay increments were double digit were long gone.
Yet when Indian government servants get a 15% hike, they are far from happy. The elite Indian Police Service, the navy, army and air force are protesting against recommendations of the Sixth Central Pay Commission.
The issue is that the recommendations are perceived to favor “babus” – the bureaucrats. Officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), for example, are slated for 40% increase.
In addition they say, what extra the increments bring are negated by runaway inflation.
The reaction is understandable, but it also says a lot about human nature, doesn’t it?
